Pregnant woman raped, tied to tree by brother-in-law

Victim family alleges attackers also looted their home
Update : 23 Dec 2021, 08:25 PM

A pregnant woman was tortured and raped allegedly by her brother-in-law and his cohorts in Bandarban’s Lama upazila early yesterday.

The perpetrators reportedly also looted the rape survivor’s home at the upazila’s Rupushipara union after raping and tying her to a tree at around 2am, said Lama police OC Md Shahidul Islam Chowdhury.

The rape survivor, whose husband lives abroad, herself filed a case yesterday afternoon against brother-in-law Joynal Abedin and another unidentified person over rape and robbery charges, he added.

“We are investigating. Legal measures will follow on the basis of our findings,” said the OC.

Joynal claimed the whole incident had been staged and false allegations were levelled against him because of a family dispute over property.

However, speaking to Dhaka Tribune, the woman claimed she identified Joynal, the step-brother of her husband, as one of the men who raped and tortured her.

According to the case details, the woman came under attack in the early hours when she came out of the house to relieve herself. Several men gagged her before torturing and raping her behind the house. At the time, they had locked her two children inside.

Later, they left her tied to a tree and robbed the house before fleeing. According to the victim’s family, the attackers made off with money and gold jewellery.

News of the incident spread after the woman was found by neighbours later in the morning.
