EC dialogue: BNP neither gets invitation nor makes decision

Update : 21 Dec 2021, 10:21 PM

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday said their party has still neither received an invitation from the president to join the dialogue on the reconstitution of the Election Commission (EC), nor has the party made a decision on whether to attend.

“We still didn’t get an invitation letter from the president (to join the talks). Once we get it from the President, we will decide on the matter through discussions at our standing committee meeting,” he said.

Fakhrul made the remarks while distributing warm clothes among the destitute under the Banani Flyover at a program arranged by Arpan Bangladesh.

Replying to a question, the BNP leader said their party had decided earlier not to engage in any talks over the election.

“As we still have not gotten any invitation letter from the president, we have not yet taken any decision on the dialogue,” he added.

Fakhrul appreciated Arpan President Bithika Binte Hossain, wife of late Swechchasebak Dal President Shafiul Bari Babu, for arranging the program.

He said Arpan has long been distributing relief among the poor every year, as well as aiding the family members of those who have been subjected to repression, killing and enforced disappearances by the current “autocratic regime”.

On Monday, President Abdul Hamid initiated a dialogue with registered political parties on reconstitution of the Election Commission (EC). The first meeting was held with Jatiya Party at Bangabhaban.

The five-year tenure of the incumbent Commission, led by Chief Election Commission KM Nurul Huda, will expire on February 14 next year.

The new election commission, to be formed by the president through a search committee after the talks, will have to arrange the 12th national election between November 2023 and January 2024.
