Jamalpur district Awami League has expelled Dewanganj Municipality Mayor Shahnewaz Shahanshah from the party over assaulting the upazila education officer at a Victory Day event.
A statement signed by Jamalpur District Awami League President Advocate Muhammad Baki Billah and General Secretary Faruk Ahmed Chowdhury said, Shahanshah was expelled for engaging in unlawful activities that undermined the party’s discipline.
The incident has “tarnished Awami League's image and embarrassed the party,” the statement reads.
On Thursday, Mayor Shahanshah was charged with assaulting a public servant during a Victory Day event.
The mayor hurled abuses at Upazila Secondary Education Officer Md Meher Ullah, presenter of the event held on the Dewanganj Government High School premises, before assaulting him.
Meher Ullah started a case the same day, said Dewanganj police Officer-in-Charge Muhammad Mohabbat Kabir.
Demanding justice, the plaintiff said he had filed the case upon instruction of Jamalpur district administration chief, Deputy Commissioner Morsheda Zaman.
