Body of sailor recovered from sunken vessel in Sundarbans after 32 days

Coast Guard divers have recovered the body of another missing sailor of the vessel that sank in the Pasur River near the Mongla Port in Bagerhat with 600 tons of coal on November 15.

The deceased is Md Jihad, 21, son of Alam Hawlader from Bhandaria of Pirojpur. 

With this, four people have been found dead in the incident. The body of another sailor, Md Hamid, is still missing.

The body of Jahid was found inside the sunken vessel during a search operation early on Friday, Mongla police station Sub-Inspector Bishwajit Mukharjee told Dhaka Tribune.

On November 21, another body was found. He was identified as the vessel’s sailor Rabiul.

MV Fardin-1, the lighter (shallow-draft boat or barge) vessel, sank after colliding with a ship near the Harbaria-9 area of the Sundarbans, outside the main channel of the Mongla Port, the third time since February this year.

Two of the seven sailors of the lighter vessel managed to swim ashore.

Coast Guard divers recovered the bodies of captain Mohi Uddin and machine greaser (oiler) Nur Islam the following day.

On March 30, another lighter vessel -- MV Efty Mahmud -- carrying 700 tons of coal sank in the Pasur River near Mongla Port. The coal-laden vessel drifted away from the jetty due to strong currents and sank after crashing into another ship.

Another cargo vessel loaded with almost 800-ton coal capsized in the same river near Mongla Port on February 27. The vessel, MV BB-1148, sank near Baniashanta area of the channel after colliding with another ship.
