Police have arrested a man for chopping off the hand of an imam in Barisal’s Babuganj upazila.
Bablu was arrested on Friday night, a few hours after he attacked Yaqub Ali, the imam of Islampur Jame Masjid in the area, said police.
“He said that it’s not permissible to pray behind this imam. He attacked the man when he refused to let Bablu stay in the mosque,” said Babuganj Police Officer-in-Charge Mahbubur Rahman.
Quoting witnesses, the police officer said that Bablu attacked Yaqub with a sharp weapon which immediately cut off three of the fingers on the imam’s right hand..
Moreover, his left hand was nearly cut off at the wrist, the OC said.
“During interrogation, Bablu confessed to having planned the attack for quite some time. We are investigating whether the attacker is a follower of any particular ideology,” he added.
If the relatives of the injured do not file a case against this incident, the police will file a case as the plaintiff, the OC further said.
Yaqub was admitted to Barisal Medical College Hospital, from where doctors referred him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
