Cox's Bazar district unit Sramik League President Johirul Islam Sikder, who was shot on Friday, died while undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital on Sunday.
His brother Kudrat Ullah Sikder, local Awami League leader and member candidate for the union's Ward No 4, was also shot and injured in the incident and now is in critical condition at a hospital.
Sadar Model Thana Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sheikh Monirul Gias said the deceased’s family has not filed any complaint or case over the shootings yet.
Upon receiving the news of Johirul’s death, his supporters staged a protest in the Link Road area of Jhilangja Union in the district and blocked traffic on the road. All shops were closed because of the disruption.
The OC said five people, including Johirul and his brother, were seriously injured on Friday night when unidentified miscreants opened fire on his office in the Link Road area of Cox’s Bazar.
The injured were admitted to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital that night and later referred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
