Three of AL MP’s family running for a mayoral post

Update : 20 Feb 2022, 11:21 AM

Three family members of Pabna-1 Awami League lawmaker Md Shamsul Haque Tuku are contesting for the mayoral post in Pabna’s Bera upazila.

Tuku’s brother and incumbent municipality Mayor Abdul Baten, Tuku’s son Asif Shams Ranjan and niece SM Sadia Alam submitted nomination papers on the last day on Tuesday.

Of them, Ranjan got the party’s nomination.

The participation of three members of the lawmaker’s family for a single post has made things complicated for the local Awami League leaders, said AL Bera unit General Secretary Abdur Rashid Dulal.

“Other rebel candidates are also campaigning,” he said.

The three other mayoral candidates are Awami League Bera unit member AHM Fazlur Rahman Masud, and central committee leaders Dr Abdul Awal and KM Abdullah.

Tuku, a former home state minister, describes it as a democratic right.

“When a family becomes bigger, different units are bound to form. Their fate will be decided by the voters,” he said.

According to Mayor Abdul Baten, some quarters were trying to get him banned from politics. “I have been mayor for 17 years. I turned Bera into a model municipality,” he said.

Responding to queries on his nephew getting the ruling party ticket, he said: “My nephew is new to politics. He doesn’t have local credibility. I am not against the Awami League. I’m contesting for the people,” he added.

Meanwhile, Tuku’s son Ranjan said: “The party chief gave me nomination after a scrutiny.”

Sadia Alam, the daughter of Tuku’s elder brother, said that she is contesting the polls at public request.
