Some activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League on Tuesday night broke the lock of a room in Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall of Rajshahi University (RU) and took control of a seat.
The bedding of one of the residential students in that room has been removed and someone else has been given possession of the seat.
The hall administration locked the room immediately after learning of the matter.
According to some residential students and staff of the hall, Sultan Mahmud Bidyut, a master's student of Population Sciences and Human Resource Management Department, and Md Sarwar Hossain, a master’s student of Agronomy and Agriculture Extension Department, reside in room 235, which is two-seated.
After the opening of the university administration hall on October 17, they did not enter the hall. Some five or six BCL activists under Md Ahsan Ullah, deputy legal affairs secretary of RU unit and also in-charge of the hall, broke the lock of that room and let Akib Abdullah, a student of Clinical psychology department possess the seat of Sultan Mahmud.
Visiting the spot, the lock of the room on the second floor of the second block has been broken. At that time, four locks were seen hanging on the door. The hall administration put a lock.
Some students near the room said quoting Akib that he had paid Tk5,000 to the BCL leaders and workers of the hall to occupy the seat.
However, denying the financial transaction, BCL leader Ahsan Ullah said: “Akib came to me with the recommendation of RU BCL General Secretary Faisal Ahmed Runu. I told him to go to that room as it was empty. Those residential students in that room have finished their education. I talked to them. But the boy entered the hall without informing me. He shouldn’t have done this.”
However, when Akib Abdullah's number was contacted, his phone was found switched off.
University Proctor Professor Liaquat Ali said it was the responsibility of the provost and hall officials to look into who was occupying the hall room or who was creating chaos.
“If the hall authorities fail to resolve the issue, the university administration will look into the matter,” he added.
