A municipality mayor in Bogra has accused the local MP of violating the electoral code of conduct ahead of the voting scheduled for November 2.
Sonatala Mayor Jahangir Alam Nannu, who seeks to be re-elected, claimed that Bogra 1 MP Shahadara Mannan has been campaigning in public for the ruling Awami League’s candidate Shahidul Bari Khan Rabbani.
Mayor Nannu, also a local Awami League leader himself, is contesting the election as an independent candidate after failing to secure the party’s ticket.
According to him, the MP’s brother, Manihaduzzaman Liton, the Sonatala upazila chairman, is also campaigning for Rabbi.
Local election officials have already written to MP Shahadara over the matter.
In a letter on Wednesday, Returning Officer Mahbub Alam reminded the lawmaker that as a very important person (VIP) she is not supposed to take part in any polls campaign in her constituency in line with the Municipalities (Conduct of Elections) Rules, 2015.
However, the ruling party MP denied Mayor Nannu’s allegations.
Rift among the local Awami League leaders in Sonatala has emerged since its municipal unit recommended the expulsion of 19 leaders and activists, including the incumbent mayor, to ensure what local leaders say, the victory of Rabbani, whose father, Shamsul Huq Khan, was chairman of the notorious Peace Committee’s Sonatala upazila unit during the Liberation War.
