One person was killed and at least 30 others injured during clashes between supporters of two independent Union Parishad (UP) chairman candidates in election-related violence in Faridpur on Saturday.
The incident took place at the Jadunandi union under Saltha upazila ahead of the second phase of the UP polls scheduled for November 11.
Locals and police identified the deceased as Mariz Sikdar, 32, of the upazila's Khardia village.
They said the clashes between supporters of candidates Rafiq Mollah and Tuku Tagore took place in phases, starting from the afternoon, over establishing supremacy in the area ahead of the election.
Mariz, a supporter of Rafiq, was severely injured during one of the clashes. He was later taken to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College Hospital in Faridpur town, where a duty doctor declared him dead.
The injured were taken to different local hospitals for treatment.
After hearing the news of his death, Rafiq’s supporters vandalized and looted more than 50 houses of Tagore's followers, including the house of Awami League’s Jadunandi union unit General Secretary Alamgir Miah.
Saltha police OC Ashiquzzaman said police brought the situation under control soon after reaching the scene. “The situation is calm now. We have detained eight people so far over their suspected involvement. Additional police personnel have also been deployed.”
Jadunandi UP’s incumbent Chairman Abul Khair said that both candidates were summoned to the local police station just two days ago and warned against fighting.
