A 9-year-old schoolgirl was murdered after rape allegedly by her relative in Narayanganj on Friday.
The victim was identified as Samia Akter, 9, daughter of Parul Begum, a resident of Rupganj upazila, Narayanganj.
The victim’s mother filed a murder case with Rupganj police station on Friday night.
Later on Saturday noon, police detained Mosaraf Mia, 45, a relative of the victim’s family, in this connection.
According to locals and police sources, Mosaraf called Samia out on Friday morning on the pretext of having breakfast. However, the victim’s family started searching for her as she didn’t return home even at noon.
The family then tried to contact Mosaraf over the phone but found it switched off.
Suspecting a kidnap, the victim’s mother then filed a case with the police station.
Following the filing of the case, police detained Mosaraf on Saturday noon with the help of locals, as confirmed by Rupganj police Sub-Inspector (SI) Shahidul Islam.
Based on the information provided by him, police later recovered the victim’s body from a local catkin field near Jangir graveyard, the police said.
“The accused confessed to his crime during primary interrogation after he was arrested on Saturday noon,” said the SI.
More details would be revealed after further investigation, the police said.
The body was later sent by the police to Victoria Hospital, Narayanganj, for autopsy.
