Update : 19 Oct 2021, 12:23 PM

A Jubo League activist was stabbed and then shot dead by unidentified assailants in Cox’s Bazar district’s Maheshkhali upazila on Monday over establishing supremacy in the area.

The incident happened at around 10pm on Monday, said police.

The victim, 35-year-old Md Ruhul Kader, was affiliated with the local unit of the Awami League’s youth front and was the president of Bangabandhu Foundation’s Maheshkhali unit.

Quoting witnesses, Maheshkhali Police OC Md Abdul Hai said that Ruhul was returning home in the Fakirjum area from Kalarmarchhara Bazar, when some men forced him to get off from the autorickshaw before stabbing and shooting him.

Locals rushed him to a public hospital at Kalarmarchhara and later to Chakoria Upazila Health Complex, where the doctors declared him dead.

Ruhul, who was a former president of the local Jubo League unit, was named in several cases, said Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Jahedul Islam.

His family claimed previous enmity as the motive.

“My brother was stabbed and shot to death due to previous enmity,” said Md Abbas, who serves as the general secretary of Jubo League’s Kalarmarchhara Union unit.

Senior ASP Islam said that a case has been filed and an investigation has begun to identify the perpetrators.
