A probe committee has been formed under the direction of the Cabinet Division to investigate the multiple deaths in open canal-drains in the city.
According to official sources, the committee is scheduled to meet on Thursday to find out the cause of the incident.
Earlier a letter, sent by the cabinet department to the Chittagong divisional commissioner, described the incident as "tragic" and asked who was responsible for it, and to investigate and send a report to the Cabinet Division, according to official sources.
Following the instructions, a seven-member investigation committee headed by Additional Divisional Commissioner (Development) of Chittagong Mohammad Mizanur Rahman was formed on October 2.
The committee includes Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) commissioner and deputy commissioner, secretary of Chittagong Development Authority (CDA), chief engineer of Water Development Board (WDB), chief engineer of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC), and director of Canal Re-excavation, Expansion and Development Project.
Meanwhile, a letter was sent to CCC and CDA on Sunday regarding the formation and meeting of the probe committee.
Earlier on September 27, Sheherin Mahmud Sadia, 19, a student of the International Islamic University, slipped and fell into a ditch in the Agrabad Mazar Gate area of the city.
On August 25, businessman Saleh Ahmed went missing after falling into the Muradpur Chashma canal, which did not have any security fences. His body is yet to be recovered.
On June 30, two people died when a CNG-run autorickshaw fell into a canal in Mayor's lane area. Not only have no security fences been built there, but locals had to put up a pole to bar CNGs from entering the road.
After the incidents, no one was willing to take responsibility for the deaths, while CDA and City Corporation have been trading blames.
