Munia murder: PBI fails to submit probe report against Bashundhara MD Anvir, gets extension

Update : 28 Feb 2022, 03:13 PM

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has failed to comply with a court order and submit the probe report against Bashundhara Managing Director Sayem Sobhan Anvir and six others in a case filed over charges of rape and murder of college student Mosarrat Jahan Munia.

On October 6, the PBI, tasked with the investigation of the case, was ordered to submit the report to Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate's Court by November 2.

Metropolitan Magistrate Begum Yeasmin Ara on Tuesday ordered Investigation Officer Golam Moktar Ashrafuddin to submit the report by November 21.

On October 9, the special tribunal to protect women and children in Dhaka had also summoned the investigating officer to appear before it on October 10 to explain, to the court’s satisfaction, the lack of visible progress on four particular points of the case, including why primary accused Sayem has not been arrested yet.

Previously, on September 30, the High Court, during a hearing of a petition for anticipatory bail sought by Sayem and his wife, cited an autopsy report and observed that multiple injuries were found on Munia’s body.

The bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice KM Zahid Sarwar struck off Sayem from the petition but granted a six-week anticipatory bail to his wife.

On April 26, police found 21-year-old Munia hanging from the ceiling fan of her bedroom in her Gulshan flat.

The final report, in a case filed by Munia's sister, was given to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka on July 19 by Abul Hasan, the case's investigating officer and also the officer-in-charge of Gulshan police station.

A Dhaka court accepted the final report on August 18 and released Sayem from the charge of abetting Munia’s suicide.

However, on September 6, the victim's elder sister filed a new lawsuit against Sayem in Dhaka's Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal 8, accusing him of rape and murdering the girl.

The chairman of the Bashundhara Group, Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, and six others were also charged with abetment in the case.

The court then ordered the PBI to investigate the allegations.
