Update : 27 Oct 2021, 03:23 PM

A Union Parishad (UP) member has been killed during a clash in Kaptai upazila, Rangamati ahead of the second phase of the UP elections slated for November 11.

Three other men were also injured in the incident that took place around 11:30pm on Tuesday, confirmed Kaptai police station OC Nasir Uddin.

The deceased was identified as Sajibur Rahman, 50. He was elected twice in a row as a member of the Kaptai union parishad.

The injured were Md Alauddin, 45, Md Salauddin, 55, and Abdul Jalil -- all residents of the same area. One of them was sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital later for better treatment.

OC Nasir said Sajibur and the three others had engaged in a heated argument with the supporters of chairman candidate Mohiuddin Patwari Badal, which soon turned into a clash and left the four injured.

Sajibur was declared dead by duty doctors after the four were rushed to the Upazila Health Complex, added the OC.

Two of the injured are still undergoing treatment there.

Police officials said they were looking into the matter.

Last Saturday, one person was killed and at least 30 others injured during clashes between supporters of two independent UP chairman candidates in pre-polls violence at the Jadunandi union under Saltha upazila, Faridpur.
