The water levels of the Dharla, Teesta, Dudhkumar and Brahmaputra rivers of the northern region have started rising in Kurigram due to rains and onrush of huge water from upstream.
In this situation, the local people fear that flood may hit the northern region.
The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) said on Saturday afternoon that the water level of the Dudhkumar river is likely to be close to the danger mark at Pateshwari point in the next 24 hours.
The Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) also said that the water in the rivers may increase till June 25.
The low-lying areas may be inundated as the water levels of major rivers in the district continue to rise.
According to the control room of BWDB, water in Dharla, Teesta, Dudhkumar and Brahmaputra continued to rise during the last 24 hours (Friday 9am to Saturday 9am).
At this time, the water of Dudhkumar river rose by 160 cm at Pateshwari point and was flowing 70 cm below the danger mark. During the same period, Brahmaputra water rose by 101 cm at Nunkhawa point and 81cm at Chilmari point. Dharla river water rose by 40 cm at the bridge point of Kurigram town. Teesta water rose by 35 cm at Kaunia Point.
The residents of the river basin on Saturday morning said that the water level had been increasing at an unusual rate for the past two-three days due to the onrush of water upstream.
Among them, the rate of water rise in Brahmaputra and Dudhkumar rivers is very high.
Due to the continuous rise in water, the residents of the river basins and char areas fear that flood may hit the region.
Munir Hossain, a resident of Rolakata Char of Sadar's Jatrapur union, said that the water has been increasing steadily for the past two days. If it continues like this, a flood situation may arise in the next one week.
Meanwhile, the temporary chars that have risen in the middle of the river have started to sink.
Abdullah Al Mamun, executive engineer of Kurigram, said that according to the FFWC forecast, heavy rainfall is likely to occur in Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar basins of the northern region and adjacent upstream areas.
The water level of the all rivers of Kurigram including Teesta, Dudhkumar and Brahmaputra will increase. The water may increase till June 25. As a result, the lower areas of this river basin may be flooded. However, this executive engineer did not give any clear answer about the flood situation in the district, he added.
Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Saidul Arif said that the water in the rivers is increasing. The district administration has all kinds of preparations to deal with possible disasters.
