Jamalpur journalist dies after alleged attack by UP chairman's followers

Nadeem's family alleged that Sadhurpara union parishad Chairman Mahmudul Alam Babu's people attacked him

Jamalpur correspondent for Golam Rabbani Nadeem, who was critically injured in an attack by miscreants at Pathati area in Bakshiganj of Jamalpur on Wednesday night, succumbed to his injuries at a Mymensingh hospital on Thursday.

He died at around 2:30pm while undergoing treatment at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, said Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam, in-charge of the police camp of the hospital.

Nadeem was also a local correspondent for Ekattor Television. 

Nadeem's family and locals claimed that Nadeem was attacked by Sadhurpara union parishad Chairman Mahmudul Alam Babu's followers for writing news reports against the chairman for the last two weeks. 

Nadeem's colleagues said some miscreants attacked Nadeem in the Pathati area on his way back home after work on Wednesday. They left Nadeem unconscious and ran away. 

At that time, the locals rushed him to Bakshiganj Upazila Health Complex. 

Later at 12pm, he was admitted to Jamalpur General Hospital for better treatment. 

When his condition deteriorated, Nadeem was taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital on Thursday morning.

Nadeem's wife Monira Begum said that Sadhurpara union parishad Chairman Mahmudul Alam Babu's men attacked Nadeem and seriously injured him. She demanded exemplary punishment for this incident.

Earlier, Nadeem's son Abdullah Al Mamun Rifat said his father died because of Chairman Mahmudul Alam Babu. “I was justice for my father.”

Jamalpur Superintendent of Police Nasir Uddin Ahmed said the police had identified the attackers from CCTV camera footage and already detained three of them.

Five police teams were working to nab the rest of them, he added.
