At least 23 people, including three policemen, were injured in a clash that took place between Jubo Dal activists and police in Comilla on Friday.
During the clash, police arrested 10 leaders and activists of Jubo Dal, the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), confirmed Comilla Additional Police Superintendent Khandakar Ashfaquzzaman.
The individuals detained were identified as Mehedi, Sayed Shubho, Nasir Uddin, Nasim, Pranto, Siam, Ishtiaq, Jahidul Islam, Roman, and Rubel.
The clash erupted in front of Comilla district unit BNP office at Kandirpar around 5:30pm.
Comilla South district and metropolitan unit Jubo Dal staged a protest march in the city on Friday afternoon, protesting the repeated arrests of Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal General Secretary Abdul Monayem (Munna) from the jail gate and demanding his release.
The march began in the Ramghat area of the city and, upon reaching the party office at Kandirpar, was obstructed by the police.
This resulted in a series of chases and altercations between police and party activists, after which the police arrested 10 people and took them to the police station.
Comilla metropolitan Jubo League Convener Faisal Hossain Pavel said: “Our gatherings and processions are always conducted peacefully, and today's (Friday's) march was no exception.”
“However, as we were concluding our event, a group of unidentified youth from outside of our party instigated an altercation with the police. They arrested 10 of our activists,” he said.
Faisal Hossain Pavel demanded the immediate release of those who were detained.
Acting officer-in-charge of Kotwali Model police station, Ahmed Sanjur Morshed, said protesters threw bricks and stones at the police without any reason, injuring three policemen.
“We arrested 10 people at that time,” he added.
