At least 15 people were killed and many others were injured after a truck rammed into a pickup van on the Sylhet-Dhaka highway in the Nazir Bazar area of Dakshin Surma upazila, Sylhet, on Wednesday.
Nine of the deceased were identified as Haris Mia, 50, Sourav, 25, Sadhu Mia, 40, Tayef Nur, 45, Sagar, 18, Rashid Mia, 40, Dulal Mia, 55, Badsha Mia, 45, and Wahid Ali, 40. The identities of the other six people could not be known immediately.
The accident occurred at around 5:30am when the sand-laden truck hit the pickup carrying construction workers in the Kutubpur area, leaving 11 people dead and many others injured, said Md Samsuddoha, officer-in-charge of Dakshin Surma police station.
The injured were taken to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared four of them dead.
Over a dozen injured are currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
The pick-up van with 25-30 construction workers was heading towards Tajpur.
Vehicular movement on the Sylhet-Dhaka highway remained suspended for three hours following the accident.
There was a long tailback on the highway after the accident. However, traffic movement resumed at around 8am after police intervention.
