Masum Billah Shahin, a leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Satkhira city, has been detained in Shyamnagar upazila with a single shot gun.

Shyamnagar police station Sub-Inspector Jahangir Alam reported that an operation was launched early on Friday morning following a tip-off about several armed individuals loitering near Hafizur's fish enclosure in the Gopalpur area.

During the operation, Masum Billah Shahin was detained, and a loaded single shot gun was recovered from him along with two fresh bullets, he said.

The others managed to escape, he added.

Shyamnagar police station Officer-in-Charge Nurul Islam Badal said that during the initial interrogation, Shahin confessed to being involved in illegal weapons manufacturing for some time.

“He operated from the heart of the city,” he added.

According to police sources, Shahin runs a multi-storey business establishment in front of Satkhira city's Mojahar Petrol Pump. He rented out several shops on the ground floor of this building.

With the assistance of local BNP leader Karim Siraj, various types of weapons and explosives, manufactured in these shops, have allegedly been used for destructive activities since 2013.

Several people, including one Rabiul Jahidul from south Palashpol village, were reportedly involved in these illegal and prohibited activities.

Masum Billah Shahin was appointed as convener of a BNP committee in Satkhira city by Satkhira BNP joint conveners Tarik and Rauf in January of the previous year.

Shahin is a former councillor of Satkhira Municipality. He is also the brother of Shafiullah Moni, or “Gold Moni”, who is notorious for gold smuggling and has been flagged by Bangladesh Police with a red alert for arrest.

Shahin faces charges in 15 cases for his involvement in various criminal activities.

Furthermore, he is a prime suspect in the murder case of Amanullah Aman, a former BNP leader.
