A 30-metre bridge has collapsed due to the unplanned dredging of the Alaikuri River by Barind Multipurpose Development Authority in Pirgacha of Rangpur.

The collapse, which took place due to the heavy flow of water, has suspended the communication system connecting 250,000 people from 60 villages across five unions in Pirgacha upazila.

The bridge collapsed at around 11am on Sunday, said Pirgacha upazila Nirbahi Officer Nazmul Haque Sumon.

He said that the Barind Multipurpose Development Authority has been summoned for an apology.

Local said that Barind Multipurpose Development Authority started the unplanned excavation for the EIRP project.

In an attempt to control the water flow, embankments were built at various locations along the river.

However, heavy rainfall caused the upstream water to overflow into the river. In response, the Barendra authorities decided to simultaneously release water from all the embankments, the bridge collapsed due to the strong flow of water.

An engineer of Pirgacha upazila LGED, who requested anonymity, said the bridge was constructed during the Liberation War.

“The bridge's upper part was constructed last in 1993, and after that, no work on it was done,” they added.

An NGO worker, Golapi Begum said that due collapse of the bridge, she has to walk 10 kilometers to go to her office.

A student, Sourav, said he had to skip school on Sunday due to the collapse.

Additionally, the farmers in the upazila said they cannot travel to markets for purchasing essential supplies such as seeds and fertilizers now.

Dhaka Tribune tried to contact Moshiur Rahman, rangpur executive engineer of Barind Development Authority, several times through phone, but he could not be reached.
