BCC polls: Symbols distributed among candidates

Seven candidates are vying for the mayoral post in the June 12 polls

The Election Commission on Friday distributed symbols among aspiring candidates for the polls to Barisal City Corporation (BCC) election, slated for June 12.

Seven candidates, 116 general councillor candidates and 42 candidates for reserved women councillor posts were given the symbols by Returning Officer Humayun Kabir at the regional election office in Nathullabad of the city.

Soon after the distribution of the symbols, the candidates officially started campaigns in accordance with the election rules and regulations.

Awami League-nominated mayor candidate Abul Khair Abdullah Khokon Serniabat got the boat symbol, the plough symbol was handed over to Engineer Iqbal Hossain Tapas, and hand-fan to Islamic Andolan Bangladesh's Mufti Syed Faizul Karim. 

Moreover, the party symbol rose flower of Zaker's party was sanctioned to its nominated mayoral candidate Mizanur Rahman Bachchu, independent candidates Ali Hossain Howladar got deer, former Chhatra Dal leader Kamrul Ahsan Rupam got table-clock and Asaduzzaman got elephant symbol.

Later, Election Officer Humayun Kabir handed over symbols among the 42 candidates competing in the election for reserved women councillor posts and 116 candidates for the posts of 30  general ward councillors.

The BCC has a total of 2,76,298 voters, including 138,809 women and 137,489 men. There will be 894 booths at 126 voting centres.
