Awami League candidate Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury on Tuesday submitted his nomination papers for the upcoming Sylhet City Corporation election.
He submitted his papers to the returning officer around 12:30pm.
The Sylhet City Corporation election is scheduled to be held on June 21.
Anwaruzzaman thanked the almighty Allah and exchanged greetings with the people of Sylhet. Speaking to the media after the submission of his nomination, he said: “I have become a candidate for the post of mayor vowing to be at your service. I also thank my leader, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, for nominating me for the post of mayor of Sylhet. I do politics for people, I do politics for human service… I firmly believe that people from all walks of life in Sylhet will give me the opportunity to work for everyone by voting for me.”
He said Sylhet has suffered a lot due to unplanned development in the last 10 years. The city dwellers have to bear many hardships.
“If everyone gives me a chance or elects me as mayor with their valuable votes, these sufferings will be alleviated on a priority basis. Apart from solving the drainage problem to solve waterlogging, necessary measures for dredging the Surma River will be taken and implemented, inshallah (God willing).”
He said that mosquito breeding spots will be destroyed and kept free of garbage to prevent mosquito influx. In this work, more effective initiatives will be taken and implemented to increase public awareness.
“We will identify problems ward-wise and solve them accordingly. It will be based on citizen opinion,” added the mayor candidate.
He said he will ensure that Nagar Bhaban becomes more citizen-friendly for the common people so that anyone can easily go there with their problems and talk about them.
In response to another question, he said that every leader and activist of the Awami League is united to ensure the victory of boat, the electoral symbol of the party.
