A case has been filed against two doctors and two nurses on charge of stealing newborns in Rajshahi.

Syeda Tamanna Akhtar, a resident of Talaimari area of Rajshahi, lodged the case with Rajpara police station on Sunday.

Of the accused, Dr Nishat Anam Barna works at the Gynecology Department of Rajshahi Royal Hospital and Dr Mohammad Ali Chowdhury Rimon at the Anesthesia Department of the same hospital.

According to the case statement, Syeda Tamanna visited Dr Nishat at his chamber at the Popular Diagnostic Centre during her pregnancy. Later, as per the doctor's advice, the woman was admitted to Royal Hospital on May 18.

At the operating theatre, she recognized Dr Nishad, Rimon and two other nurses holding her wrists while Dr Rimon pushed the anesthesia syringe on her body.

The next morning, when she returned to her senses the doctors informed her that there was no baby in her womb after the operation. The patient said she could feel when the baby was being taken out of her womb.

She claimed that after being taken to the operating theatre (OT) and receiving anesthesia, she gave birth, but the hospital staff allegedly stole her baby.

Dr Nishat Anam Barna claimed that a woman arrived at the hospital showing all the signs of pregnancy. Before an examination could take place, she went into labour. That is when she was taken to the OT but no baby was found in her womb. She further claimed that the patient did not have any test reports that said she was pregnant.

Kajal Nandi, sub-Inspector at Rajpara police station, said they were investigating the matter and further details can be said after there is progress.
