20 hurt as cops, BNP men clash in Khulna; 10 arrested

Among the injured, three people sustained bullet injuries

At least 20 people were injured in a clash that took place between leaders and activists of BNP and police in Khulna. 

The incident took place at around 4:30pm in front of Khulna press club on Friday.

Police fired several rounds of tear gas to disperse the BNP activists in the clash. BNP supporters alleged that the police fired bullets at them. 

According to the BNP, 20 people including Mujibur Rahman, member of Dighlia Senati Union Ward No 6, Jubo Dal leader Zahidur Rahman were injured in the clash. Among the injured, three BNP men received bullet injuries. 

Meanwhile, police arrested 10 people from the spot. 

Khulna Metropolitan BNP Member Secretary Shafiqul Alam Tuhin alleged that police fired bullets, tear gas and charged BNP men with batons at their rally without any provocation. Many BNP men were injured. 

He said that BNP arranged a protest rally demanding the government's resignation, protest against fake cases and the implementation of their 10-point demand. 

The incident started with the police obstructing the procession of BNP men, he claimed.

Officer-in-Charge of Khulna Sadar Police Station Hasan Al Mamun said that police asked the BNP men to maintain peace at their rally, but they threw bricks along with obstructing police in performing their duties.  

A total of 10 people have been arrested for creating disorder. The situation is now under police control, said the OC.
