Update : 08 May 2023, 10:41 AM

The fire that erupted at GJ Caps and Headwear Ltd factory in Sataish area of Gazipur's Tongi upazila on Sunday night was brought under control.

Seven firefighting units from Tongi and Joydebpur fire service managed to contain the blaze after three hours of effort at around 12:30am on Monday.

Tongi Fire Service Station Officer Iqbal Hossain confirmed that the fire started on the fifth floor of the factory at around 9:30pm.

He added: "When the news of the fire spread, the workers came down from the factory and took position on the road. Fortunately, there were no workers inside the factory at the time; therefore, no casualties occurred."

An Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) bulletin around 11pm said members of Bangladesh Army were deployed to control the fire.

Factory HR Department Manager Moniruzzaman reported that the fire initially broke out on the fifth floor of the seven-story building around 9:30pm before spreading to the fourth, sixth and seventh floors.

He claimed that agitated workers were responsible for starting the fire.

Moniruzzaman explained that workers had been protesting against the factory management over pending salaries, allowances and other issues.

On Sunday afternoon, the workers stopped working and began protesting inside the factory.

Although management held discussions with the agitated workers at 8pm, they left without concluding the meeting around 9pm.

Moniruzzaman said: "At one point, they set fire to the fifth floor of the factory, which then spread to other floors."
