Forest Department stopped the movement of the trawlers on Saturday

Update : 06 May 2023, 08:12 PM

Tourist trawlers have been temporarily banned in Kalagachhi and Dobeki tourist centres of the Satkhira range of the Sundarbans due to the widespread use of plastic materials.

The Forest Department stopped the movement of the trawlers at 11am on Saturday.

Ferdous Ahmed, an owner of a trawler in Kheyaghat in the Shyamnagar upazila, said that since Saturday is a holiday, many tourists were in Munshiganj to go to the Sundarbans.

Officials in Munshiganj and Burigoalini forest patrol outposts stopped issuing permits to the trawlers. Trawler movement has been temporarily suspended to save the environment and river pollution as tourists carry excessive amounts of plastic bottles and food packets and throw them everywhere.

He added that a meeting has been scheduled between the assistant conservator of forest and the owners of the trawlers that operate in the Sundarbans on Saturday evening.

Ahmed hopes the restriction would be lifted by the Forest Department soon.

In this regard, Iqbal Chowdhury, assistant forest conservator of the Satkhira range of the Sundarbans said that he went to the Kalagachhi tourist centre on Friday and saw a lot of plastic materials everywhere.

He added that he has been plastic floating in the rivers as well.

“If trawler authorities can take responsibility to save the environment then they will be given permits again,” he added.
