18 injured in Gazipur factory explosion

The explosion occurred after a fire broke out from the gas line leakage in a room of the factory, fire service says

At least 18 people, including 16 workers, were injured in a gas line burst at a garment factory in Kashimpur South Zarun area of Gazipur.

The incident took place at Mandal Group's BD Garment Factory at 9am on Monday.

Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Konabari Zone Assistant Commissioner Didarul Islam confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

Assistant Director of Gazipur Fire Service and Civil Defence Abdullah-Al-Arefin said the explosion took place due to excessive gas pressure in the factory's gas control room. 

As the factories were closed on May Day, the pressure in the gas line increased. This caused an explosion by rupturing a valve in the gas supply room (RMS), he added.

Meanwhile, the General Manager (operation) of the factory, Engineer Aminul Islam, said that 16 workers of the factory, including three laborers were injured in the incident. 

The injured have been taken to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, and Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Among the injured Faizur, 51, Sabur, 35, Sahabul Islam, 44, Chan Mia, 45, Aslam Sikder, 27, Abdul Haque, 60, Soher Rana, 24, Al Amin Gazi, 35, Hridoy, 17, Khokon, 45, Fazlur Haque, 52, are being treated at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

And Toufiq, 32, Arif, 22, Abul Hossain,56, Rakib, 40, Shariful, 32, Babul, 35, Mim, 22, are being treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
