Update : 27 Apr 2023, 06:12 PM

The Awami League's mayoral candidate, Advocate Azmat Ullah Khan, on Thursday submitted his nomination papers for the upcoming Gazipur City Corporation polls.

Azmat Ullah Khan, accompanied by party leaders and activists, submitted the forms at noon, said Returning Officer Faridul Islam.

“The election will undoubtedly be fair and peaceful and public participation will be ensured,” Azmat Ullah told journalists after leaving the returning officer's office.

“My strength is the common people, and I know they support the Awami League; therefore, I do not consider anyone an opponent,” he said.

Azmat Ullah further stated: “Since the voting date was announced, we have seen enthusiasm and excitement among the people of Gazipur at all levels. The Bangladesh government has repeatedly declared the Election Commission an independent institution, and as per their announcement, we firmly believe that the election will be 100% fair, unhindered and impartial.”

Regarding Gazipur's former mayor Jahangir Alam's nomination submission, Azmat Ullah Khan said he believes Jahangir Alam has faith in the leadership of the Awami League and the progress of the country and he will respect the party's decision and act accordingly.

Nomination papers will be scrutinized on April 30, while May 8 has been kept as the deadline for withdrawing candidature. Symbols will be allocated to the candidates the next day.

The Gazipur City Corporation election will be held through electronic voting machines (EVMs) on May 25.

Assistant Returning Officer and District Election Officer AHM Kamrul Hasan said there will be 478 centres with 3,491 permanent and 486 temporary polling stations for the vote in 57 general wards and 19 reserved wards.

In this election, 478 presiding officers, 3,491 assistant presiding officers and 6,982 polling officers will be appointed, he added.
