One killed in Sunamganj clash over exchanging shoes after Eid prayer

Some 15 people were detained in this incident

A young man was killed in a clash over exchanging shoes after an Eid prayer in Sunamganj's Dowarabazar upazila.

The incident took place at Maizkhala village of Dowarabazar Sadar Union at around 9am on Saturday. .

The deceased was identified as Abul Kasem, 25, son of deceased Idris Ali of Maizkhala village.

According to police and locals, A Ziaur Rahman of the village had been in dispute with another villager Jalal Shah of Maizkhala village for a long time. 

They locked into an altercation over exchanging shoes at Maizkhala Mosque on Saturday morning.

At one point, people from both sides locked into a fierce clash with weapons. Some 20 people from both sides were injured in the clash. After receiving the information, the police went to the spot and brought the situation under control within an hour. 

Some 15 people were detained in this incident. 

They were admitted to Upazila Health Complex and Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.

Among the injured, Abul Kasem, who was seriously injured, died while undergoing treatment at Osmani Medical College Hospital.

Confirming the matter, Dowarabazar Police Station OC Deb Dulal Dhar said: "There was a long-standing dispute between the two parties over land and dominance in the area.” 

The process of filing the case is going on. Jalal Shah and Ziaur Rahman have been absconding since the incident, the OC added.
