Three factory workers died after taking iftar at Kaliakair upazila of Gazipur district on Sunday evening.
The details of the deceased could not be known yet.
Kaliakair Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Tajwar Akram Sakapi said that three workers of a factory located in Chandra area of Kaliakair upazila got ill after taking iftar and were taken to the hospital, where the doctors declared the three dead.
The doctors could not identify the exact cause of their deaths.
Sheikh Fazilatunnessa Mujib Memorial KPJ Specialized Hospital's Senior Staff Nurse Khadija Akhter said three deceased men and one severely ill individual were brought to the hospital around 9pm.
“The people who brought them in were unable to provide the names and identities of the deceased. Efforts are being made to confirm their identities. One person is still in critical condition,” she said.
Upon hearing the news of the deaths, the angry workers of the factory started protesting at around 9:15pm.
They blocked the Chandra-Nabinagar highway in front of the factory by burning tires and dry wooden objects, expressing their outrage and seeking justice for the victims.
However, the situation has returned to normal after the intervention of law enforcement agencies.
Factory authorities said the three workers died after drinking syrup-like drinks brought from outside.
“Nearly 13,000 employees break their fast daily at the factory during the holy month of Ramadan and the factory always provides healthy iftar meals for all employees,” the authorities added.
