Man held with gold worth 2C in Chittagong

A criminal complaint has been filed against the passenger with Patenga police

The National Security Intelligence (NSI) has recovered 24 bars of gold from a passenger at Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport.

On Wednesday evening, almost three kilograms of gold were found hidden in the belt of the passenger returning to the UAE at the immigration lounge of the airport, according to NSI official.

The arrestee was identified as Atiq Ullah of Hathazari upazila of Chittagong.

According to NSI, the passenger came to Chittagong from Sharjah in the UAE on Air Arabia flight G9-522 at around 7:09 pm on Wednesday.  Earlier, based on secret information, NSI officials were stationed at the airport.

Later, around 7:25pm, the passenger was held and searched in the immigration lounge. Meanwhile, 24 of 22-carat gold bars and 100 grams of gold ornaments were found hidden in his pants belt.

The found gold weighs 2.896kg and is worth Tk2,10,10,000 in the market.

He said that the recovered gold and arrested passenger were sent over to a customs detective for further legal action.

Bashir Ahmed, additional director general of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate, said that a criminal complaint has been filed against the individual arrested at the city's Patenga police station.
