The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has recovered the body a 10-year-old girl who was abducted while going to school on March 21, in the Pahartali Wireless Chicken Farm area of Chittagong city.

The body of Abida Sultana Ayoni was recovered from a pond early Wednesday and it is suspected that she was raped before being murdered, said PBI Superintendent of Police Nayeema Sultana.

The prime suspect in the case, Rubel, 35, was interrogated, and according to his information, Abida's body was recovered from the pond, she said.

Details will be revealed through a press conference on Wednesday, said the PBI SP.

According to the case statement, the fourth-grader was going to school on that day. When she reached Kazir Dighi's Sagarika Road area, local vegetable seller Rubel lured her to give kittens and abducted her which was caught on CCTV footage. Since then the girl had remained untraced.

On Tuesday, the child's mother, garment worker Bibi Fatema, filed a complaint with a Chittagong court, accusing vegetable seller Md Rubel of kidnapping Ayoni.

Judge Sharmin Jahan of Chittagong's Second Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal accepted the complaint and directed the Pahartali police station officer-in-charge to register it as a case and take legal action.

SP Nayeema Sultana told reporters that Rubel was kept under surveillance after the child went missing. On Tuesday night, after the PBI had gathered some evidence, he was taken into custody for questioning.

"At one point, Rubel admitted to raping the girl on the fourth floor of an abandoned building in the Kazirdighi area on March 21, the day of her disappearance. Later, he suffocated her to death and dumped her body in a garbage bag."
