Comilla Victoria College student and theatre worker Sohagi Jahan Tonu's mother Anwara Begum has said she has become hopeless seeing no signs of progress in the probe into her daughter's murder even after seven years.
She asked where to go or to whom to reach out to get justice.
A second-year student of the History Department, Tonu went missing on March 20, 2016, after she left home for tutoring at a house inside Comilla Cantonment. Her body was later found abandoned in a bush.
The next day, Tonu's father filed a murder case against unknown assailants at Kotwali model police station.
Since September 2020, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has been dealing with the sensational case. The investigating officer claimed that the probe was going on following all procedures but refused to disclose details.
"There is some progress, but it cannot be revealed to the media right now," PBI Inspector Mojibur Rahman said, adding that he had spoken to Tonu's family members, college teachers and others after the transfer of the case to the PBI.
So far, none of the accused has been identified.
In this regard, Tonu's father Yaar Hossain said: “PBI has not contacted us after November 2020. I do not know if we will get justice in this situation.”
Tonu's mother Anwara Begum expressed the same apprehension about getting justice. She said: “In previous years, the investigating officers used to come to us. Only once in the last two years have I heard about the PBI coming to the scene. However, they did not contact us.”
Complaining that Tonu might not get justice because she was poor, Anwara said: “If I can see the trial of my daughter's murder before I die, I would find peace.”
When asked about the progress in the Tonu murder case, PBI chief Banaj Kumar Majumdar said: “PBI is seriously investigating the murder case. We are moving slowly. The investigation is not over yet.”
