Case filed against RU students on charge of stealing railway equipment

A total of three cases have been filed till now following Saturday’s clash and protest

A case has been filed against unidentified number of students of Rajshahi University (RU) bringing an allegation of stealing goods from the railway line.

Bangladesh Railway Rajshahi Senior Sub-Assistant Engineer Bhavesh Chandra Raj Bangshi filed the case with GRP police station as the plaintiff on Monday.

According to the case statement, agitated students of the university set fire to the railway line near Rajshahi University Arts Gate at 7:45pm on Sunday.

The students allegedly stole 92 pandal clips, one steel slipper from the railway line by breaking the windows of a room of the railway. 

They also destroyed three wooden slippers, according to the case statement.

It has been requested to take legal action in this regard.

Asim Kumar Talukder, general manager (GM) of Railway (Western division) said: "According to our rules, a list of the damaged equipment has been given.”

Police on Sunday filed a case against some 300 people over the Saturday's clash between Rajshahi University students and locals.

On Sunday afternoon, RU Registrar Prof M Abdus Salam filed a case against 400-500 unidentified people in Matihar police station.

A group of youths set fire to railway tracks on Sunday night following the clash between students and locals, halting rail communication between Rajshahi and Dhaka.

Around 8pm, the students set fire to the rail line near the Faculty of Fine Arts of the university, Rajshahi Railway Station Super Abdul Karim said.

The clash took place in the city's Binodpur area near the university campus on Saturday night, leaving at least 200 students injured.

The students of the university blocked the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway on Sunday to protest the attack on them by locals and police on Saturday.
