Sitakunda blast: Case filed against 16 including 3 owners

Seven died, 17 injured in Sitakunda oxygen plant explosion on Saturday

A case has been filed against 16 people, including the three owners of the Seema oxygen plant, in connection with the Saturday's blast in Chittagong's Sitakunda area.

Rokeya Begum, the wife of a victim Abdul Kadir, who died in the blast, filed the case at Sitakunda police station at 11:30pm on Monday.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Abu Tayeb Md Arif Uddin, spokesperson of Chittagong District Police, confirmed the development to Dhaka Tribune. 

He said that victim Abdul Kadir's wife filed the case mentioning names of 16 people including three brothers who are the owners of the factory. 

The three owners are Shema Oxygen Oxyco Limited's Managing Director Md Mamun Uddin, and two Directors Ashraf Uddin alias Bappi and Parvez Uddi Shantu.

Tofayel Ahmed, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sitakunda police station, said: “Apart from three brothers, the remaining 13 accused were officers on duty at the plant at the time of the explosion.” 

The case has been recorded under sections 337, 338, 304, and 427 of the Penal Code for causing death due to negligence, the OC added.

According to the case statement, victim Kadir, who worked at the oxygen plant for around 13 years, died due to “negligence and irresponsibility” of the accused, including the owners.

Besides, a total of 17 injured in the explosion are receiving treatment in different wards of Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH). One of them has been kept in the ICU.

The explosion happened around 4:40pm on Saturday. On receiving information, nine units of the Fire Service, army, RAB, police and volunteer organizations participated in the rescue work.

The explosion at Seema Oxygen Plant rattled neighbouring areas and engulfed them in thick black smoke. Locals said the massive explosion shook at least two square kilometres of the surrounding area.
