A young cyclist and national medallist Mashrafe Hossain Maruf died after his hand slipped from the train handle at Chirribbandar railway station in Dinajpur Tuesday morning.
Sources said, Maruf was returning home by Panchagarh Express train from Dhaka after getting two silver and one bronze medals in Sheikh Kamal National Youth Games cycling competition at Dhaka Army Stadium on Monday.
On the way back, after crossing the Chirribbandar station, while showing his school to his friends, his hand slipped from the handle of the train. Locals quickly rescued him and took him to Chirribbandar Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Maruf is the son of Anisur Rahman of Barabaul village of Auliapukur union of Chirribbandar upazila and a regular athlete and cyclist of Chirribbandar Sports Association. He has also won several medals in national athletics competitions.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Khalid Hasan, General Secretary of Chirribbandar Upazila Sports Association Morshed ul Alam, along with officials of Dinajpur District Sports Association visited the site of the incident and expressed their condolences to the bereaved family at their village home and prayed for salvation of the departed soul.
Bajlur Rashid, officer-in-charge of Chirribbandar police station, said that the body was handed over without post-mortem due to the request of the family. A general diary has been made in this incident.
