Harunur Rashid Khan, chairman of Shibpur upazila parishad of Narsingdi, was shot at his own residence on Saturday.
The incident took place around 6am at his home office, said Shibpur police station Officer-in-Charge Feroz Talukder.
Feroz Talukder said Harunur Rashid Khan was returning home from the mosque next to his house after the morning prayer on Saturday. Three young men came to meet him and Harunur Rashid took them to his home office.
“The young men asked for money for a mosque that is under construction. When Harunur Rashid went up to pay them, they shot him from behind,” the OC said.
“The perpetrators ran away after shooting Harunur Rashid, and his family took him to Shibpur Upazila Health Complex. Harunur Rashid has been sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment,” he added.
Meanwhile, the chairman's supporters were protesting at Itakhola Chattar on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway demanding the arrest of the shooters, OC Feroz Talukder said.
They blocked the road by burning tyres, which caused a traffic jam on the highway, the OC added.
Police are trying to nab the perpetrators, and the crime scene has been cordoned off, Feroz Talukder said.
Narsingdi Additional Superintendent of Police (crime) Anirban Chowdhury said additional forces have been deployed in Shibpur to avoid any untoward incident.
