Bogra upazila Awami League President and upazila Chairman freedom fighter Rezaul Karim Montu, along with influential people in Sariakandi upazila, have been accused of illegally extracting sand from the Bengali River and filling the Ramnagar Canal.

Fish farming is done at 16 dams in different places of the canal. As a result, there is a fear of waterlogging in about 3,000 hectares of cropland of the two unions under the canal.

The victims have sought the prompt intervention of the concerned department of the government to take action in this regard.

Regarding the complaint, Rezaul Karim Montu said that Ramnagar canal is privately owned. The canal is of no use due to the damming of the Bengali river. So, like many, he is also filling parts of the canal.

Some people cultivate fish by closing both sides. There will be no flooding, water shortage, damage to bridges worth crores of takas or any other problem. His opponents are lying against him, he added.

On the eastern side of Fulbari union in Sariakandi upazila of Bogra is the traditional 30-metre Ramnagar Canal. Sources said that recently, about 16 places of Ramnagar Canal are being dammed for fish farming.

On the other hand, its adjacent area has been filled with sand. Sand is being extracted illegally from the river and dumped into the canal.

Residents of the area complained that Sariakandi upazila Awami League President and upazila Chairman Rezaul Karim Montu and his people are behind the canal filling.

Farmers Rana Mia, Mofazzal Hossain, Mukul Mia and others of Ramnagar village of Hatfulbari union of the upazila said that Ramnagar canal is historic. Once filled, thousands of bighas of land in Narchi and Fulbari union will be flooded.
