Four hundred inmates of Gopalganj district jail paid tribute to language martyrs on the occasion of International Mother Language Day and Shaheed Dibash.
They paid tribute by placing flowers in the image of Jatiya Shaheed Minar of the district jail at 9:30am on Tuesday.
This was followed by singing the national anthem and the immortal song on Amar Ekushey – "Amar Bhaiyer Rakte Rangano Ekushey February”.
Earlier, District Jail Superintendent Md Al Mamun, district jail officers including Md Moshfiqur Rahman, jail guards and others paid tribute to the martyrs by offering wreaths.
District Jail Superintendent Md Al Mamun said: “The day is very important in our national life. The seeds of our freedom lay within the language movement. Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman directly participated in the language movement.”
“We screened documentaries in front of the prisoners about the contribution of the father of the nation in the language movement, the great liberation war and the development of Bangladesh. From here, the prisoners expressed their determination to build Bangabandhu's ideology of Sonar Bangla and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Smart Bangladesh in the spirit of the liberation war,” he added.
On February 21, 1952, defying Section 144 of unlawful assembly in an attempt to protest against the imposition of Urdu as the only state language, students assembled at the Dhaka University premises, demanding equal recognition of their language, Bangla.
