Two cases were filed on Sunday against 986 BNP activists – 386 named and 600 unnamed persons – over an alleged attack on Awami League leaders in Sirajganj.
Police arrested seven people in this case including Sirajganj Jubo Dal President Mirza Abdul Jabbar Babu and BNP Sirajganj municipality Organizing Secretary and Councillor Shahriar Shipu.
Md Humayun Kabir, officer-in-charge (OC) of the Sirajgang Sadar police station, said Sub-Inspector (SI) Saiful Islam and Kaliahoripur union Awami League General Secretary Md Jahangir Hossain filed the two cases on Saturday evening for setting fire to 12 motorcycles, obstructing government work, throwing cocktails and vandalism.
Superintendent of Police Arifur Rahman Mondal said seven people were arrested in this case and an operation is underway to capture the rest.
At least 19 people were injured in a clash between Awami League and BNP activists during the latter's union-level march in Sirajganj's Sadar upazila on Saturday morning.
Twelve motorbikes were vandalized and three were burnt during the clash.
Brickbats were thrown from a BNP procession when Awami League activists were holding a meeting to prepare for a peace rally at Paikpara Bazar around 10am.
Both groups locked into a clash at one stage while police charged batons to bring the situation under control.
