A Rangpur court has ordered the arrest warrant against Senior Judicial Magistrate Debanshu Kumar Sarkar and his father Sudhangsu Kumar Sarkar Chandan in the case filed over torture of doctor Hridita Sarkar for dowry.
Judge Mustafa Kamal of Rangpur Woman and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 gave the order on Wednesday.
Special PP of Women and Child Torture Court Advocate Rafiq Hasnain said that Dr Hridita, who obtained MBBS degree from Rangpur Medical College, filed the complaint where she said that she got married to Senior Judicial Magistrate Debanshu Kumar Sarkar in 2015. At the time of marriage, her parents gave 30 bhori gold jewellery along with Tk50 lakhs worth furniture and electronics.
However, few days after the marriage, Debanshu demanded a dowry of Tk30 lakh to buy a new car. As she refused to give him the money, he began to torture her.
She still continued living with him for her child until on 28 March 2022, Hridita went to the Chief Judicial Magistrate and demanded justice. On hearing this news, Devangsu along with his father and other accused tried to kill her by suffocation in the court premises. At that time, people from around rescued her and admitted her to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
After 21 days of treatment, a case was filed in the court. Advocate Rafiq Hasnain said that the judge ordered Rangpur PBI to investigate the case and give a report. After filing the PBI investigation report, the court asked the PBI officials to appear before the court and present the report.
Later, the judge ordered the issuance of arrest warrant against the accused Senior Judicial Magistrate Devangsu Sarkar and his father Sudhangsu Kumar Sarkar upon hearing the report.
