Son of a deceased person attacked and vandalized the doctor's room of the medicine department of Sher E Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barisal on Sunday afternoon.
Police detained Jumman, who was released later on the request of the doctor, police said.
The deceased is Shahidul Islam, 50. He was a resident of Kalsgram area of Kashipur union of Sadar upazila.
Shahidul's brother-in-law Farooq Howladar said that Shahidul suffered a heart attack on Saturday night and was admitted to Barisal Sher E Bangla Medical College Hospital around 9am on Sunday.
Farooq alleged that his brother-in-law died due to the hospital's delay in giving him oxygen.
According to him, the senior doctor visiting the patient at that time scolded the nurses on duty for the death of the patient.
In this regard, Jumman became angry and vandalized the doctor's room. Later, police rushed to the spot and detained him.
SI Mainul of Barisal SBMCH Police Camp said: “Jumman, the son of the deceased patient, broke the chair table, cup and dish in the doctor's room. On getting the news, police went to the spot and detained him.”
Later, he was released on the request of the doctors.
Medicine unit Registrar Dr Solaiman said: “In the medical ward, patients pass away daily. To save the patient's life, doctors make every effort. But the patient's family members frequently lose their cool. Therefore, it is crucial to install CCTV cameras in addition to the ward's security.”
Hospital director Dr HM Saiful Islam said: “More patients are present here in comparison to the doctors. Four hundred patients must be treated with three doctors on staff. Therefore, doctors are unable to offer patients adequate time to provide more intensive care.”
“However, it is not correct that the patient dies due to the negligence of the doctors. The doctors try their best. Efforts are being made to increase the safety of doctors. The public works department has been requested to install CCTV cameras in different indoor wards of the hospital as soon as possible,” the SBCH director added.
