Jahangir Alam lost his Awami League post for controversial remarks on Bangabandhu and martyrs of Liberation War

Update : 22 Jan 2023, 09:49 AM

Jahangir Alam, the suspended mayor of Gazipur City Corporation who lost his Awami League post for controversial remarks on Bangabandhu and the Liberation War martyrs, has been reinstated to the party, subject to conditions.

Jahangir Alam received a letter signed by Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Saturday evening mentioning that he has been pardoned on the condition he will not engage in activities against the interest of the organization and break discipline in the future.

A copy of the letter was also given to Awami League Organizing Secretary Mirza Azam, president and general secretary of the party's Gazipur city unit.

The Awami League decided to pardon the former mayor at the National Committee meeting held at Ganabhaban on December 17, 2022.

Jahangir Alam was pardoned according to Article 17(6) and 47(2) of the constitution of the organization, the letter read.

The letter also warned that indulging in any anti-organizational activities in the future will be considered unpardonable.

In response to receiving the pardon letter from the party's Dhanmondi office, Jahangir Alam said: “I express my deep gratitude to Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, Awami League Central Executive Committee and all the leaders of the National Committee.”

In September 2021, videos of Jahangir making derogatory comments on Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the martyred freedom fighters of the Liberation War at a program went viral on social media.

In a meeting held on November 19 of that year, the ruling Awami League expelled Alam from his position in the party over the incident, which was followed by his suspension as GCC mayor by the local government ministry a few days later over various allegations.

The allegations included illegal land grabbing, not compensating people after taking over land for development and working against the public interest.
