Update : 21 Jan 2023, 11:42 PM

Some 600 BNP-Jamaat men were sued in the two cases filed over the vandalism of police boxes, and government assets and attacking cops over the alleged custodial death of a Gazipur trader, Rabiul.

The cases were filed by Sub Inspector (SI) of Basan police station Hanif Mahmud on Thursday night.

In one of the cases filed under the Special Powers Act, three top leaders of Jamaat - Khairul Hasan, Hussain Ali, and Maulana Omar Farooq were made accused.

Apart from them, the convener of Gazipur metropolitan unit BNP Bashir Ahmed Bachchu, former organizing secretary of Basan unit BNP Nurul Islam, among others men were named.

In both cases, the local BNP-Jamaat men have been accused of directly inciting and aiding the agitated crowd in carrying out the vandalism and attack.

According to the case statement, on January 17, locals blocked the Dhaka-Tangail and Dhaka-Mymensingh highways over the alleged road crash of Rabiul.

At that time, the BNP-Jamaat men started to gather with the agitated locals in an attempt to destroy the image of the government.

When the agitated locals were given assurance that legal actions will be taken over the road accident, they started to attack the police under the influence of the BNP-Jamaat men.

The locals later vandalized police boxes and other government assets.

On Thursday, after seeing Rabiul's body, his brother-in-law claimed the injuries the body bore were not from a road accident.

“The body had injuries from assault. There was blood on the nose and mouth, the soles of both feet, and his ankles were cracked. People don't get injuries like this from accidents,” said Rabiul's brother-in-law Rafiqul Islam at Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue.

He said Rabiul's family is currently going through a bad phase. “In this situation, they have not taken any decision whether they will take legal action or not.”

Rabiul's body was taken from Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue around 9pm on Wednesday. Later, the body was buried in the family cemetery at around 11am on Thursday.

Police arrested Rabiul and three others on charges of gambling on January 14. However, the police released three of them.

On January 17, a team of police went to the house of Rabiul and took a signature on a white paper from his wife.

After that, Rabiul's wife learned that her husband was dead.

Malek Khasru, officer-in-charge of Bason police station, said two sub-inspectors took Rabiul to the police station and they let him go from the police station on January 17.

However, on the way home, Rabiul was knocked down by a truck, he said.

Rabiul was taken to Shaheed Tajuddin Medical College and Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, according to police.

Enraged by the death, local people, equipped with sticks, put up barricades on Dhaka-Tangail and Dhaka-Mymensingh highways on Wednesday morning, disrupting traffic movement.

Two policemen from GMP were withdrawn from their duty on Wednesday over the death.

The policemen are Mahbub and Nurul Islam, both assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) of Bason Police Station, Gazipur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Crime) Abu Torab Mohammad Shamsur Rahman told UNB.

Meanwhile, a three-member probe committee headed by Additional Police Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police Md Delwar Hossain has been formed to investigate this incident, he added
