Two assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) of Bason police station of Gazipur have been withdrawn over the death of a businessman due to alleged police torture.
A three-member probe committee, led by Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Additional Commissioner Delwar Hossain, has been formed to investigate the incident.
The accused are assistant sub-inspectors of Bason police station Mahbubub Rahman and Nurul Islam, GMP Deputy Commissioner Abu Torab Shamsur Rahman confirmed.
The deceased Rabiul, son of Baki Mandal, was a yarn trader. He was arrested by the police on Tuesday for online gambling. Three others were arrested with him.
Although the three others were released, the police did not release Rabiul until midnight on Tuesday.
Bason police station called Nupur Begum, the wife of the deceased Rabiul, to the police station at around 2am on Wednesday.
Dhaka TribuneWhen she went to the police station, the police took her signature on a white paper and said Rabiul was injured in a road accident. Later, Nupur Begum came to know that Rabiul died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
When the news of Rabiul's death reached his relatives, they blocked the Bhogra bypass road in Gazipur on Wednesday morning.
They set fire to four motorcycles and a traffic police box at this time.
Meanwhile, traffic jams were created on both sides of the highway.
After receiving the information, the police reached the spot and removed the angry mob from the highway. The traffic returned to normal around noon after two hours.
Bason police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Malek Khosru said Rabiul was arrested on Tuesday night for allegedly gambling with bitcoins on his mobile phones.
When Rabiul was released that night, he was injured in an accident on the Bhogra bypass road on his way back home, the OC said.
“He was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he died. The police did not torture him and he did not die due to police torture,” he added.
