Woman dies trying to warm from fire in Rangpur

Eight more people were admitted with severe burns in the last 24 hours

A pregnant woman died while trying to stay warm from bonfires in Rangpur Wednesday morning.

The deceased Bulli Begum, 25, of Fulbari area of Dinajpur district, died while undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

Dr MA Hamid Palash, assistant professor of the head of the burn unit, said that 60% of the woman's body, including her respiratory tract, were burnt.

Eight more people were admitted with severe burns in the last 24 hours.

Dr Palash said that an average of five burn patients were being admitted every day. All the victims were women and children.

Assistant Meteorologist at Rangpur Meteorological Office Mostafizar Rahman said that the temperature has been around 8 degrees Celsius for the last three days. The worst problem has been the frosty winds that have multiplied the severity of the winter. 

He added that the temperature may drop further.

Pneumonia among children rising

Six children died in Rangpur Medical College Hospital due to pneumonia and cold related diseases in the last three days.

With this, the total death in the season stands at 27.

On the other hand, there is no room in the hospital's 9th and 10th children's wards and the intensive care unit.

As a result, the affected children are being treated by admitting three children in one bed. Even three babies were being given one saline through three tubes.

Relatives said that hundreds of children were kept on the floor without a bed.

When the director of the hospital, Dr Shariful Hasan, was contacted, he admitted that the doctors were struggling to provide treatment as there were more patients than beds in the hospital.
