Another farmer still held captive

Update : 11 Jan 2023, 12:16 PM

Of the four farmers kidnapped in Cox's Bazar's Teknaf, three have been released after the payment of Tk5.5 lakh in ransom.

The farmers who were released are Abdur Rahman, Muhib Ullah and Abdul Hakim, Rashed Mahmud Ali, chairman of Hnila union parishad, confirmed on Wednesday.

The abductors did not release the other abductee, Abdus Salam, as the ransom demanded from his family was not received.

Earlier, four farmers were allegedly abducted by Rohingyas in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar on Sunday.

The four – Abdus Salam, Abdur Rahman, Muhib Ullah and Abdul Hakim of the Lechuaprang area of Hnila union – were guarding their fields at the time of the incident.

After that, the abductors demanded a total of Tk20 lakh in ransom – or Tk5 lakh per person.

Chairman Rashed Mahmud Ali, quoting the three released farmers, said as Abdus Salam's family is wealthy, the abductors are demanding more ransom from his family.

Those who returned after paying ransom have signs of torture in different parts of their bodies, said the chairman, adding: “No one is giving information about the criminals out of fear.”

Mahfuzul Islam, superintendent of police in Cox's Bazar, said police have heard that three out of four farmers have returned. However, the families of the abductees did not inform the police about the ransom issue from the beginning. They did not even file any complaints.

Still, the police are trying to rescue Abdus Salam, he said.

“It is difficult for police to take action if the families of the abductees do not cooperate. Yet, the police are trying to arrest the criminals and bring them to justice,” he added.
