Ferry and launch services on the Daulatdia-Paturia route have been suspended due to dense fog.
The authorities suspended the launch and ferry services at 6am on Wednesday.
Several hundred vehicles were reportedly stuck waiting to cross the river. Their drivers and passengers were suffering due to the biting cold.
Nuru Sheikh, a bus driver stuck at Daulatdia ferry terminal, said: “We have been seeing dense fog for the last 15 days. Although the fog was less for a few days in between, for the last three-four days, we are seeing thick fog. Due to the disruption of ferry service, we all are suffering.”
The services were halted to avoid accidents due to poor visibility, said Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) Daulatdia Terminal Manager (Trade) Md Salahuddin.
Once the fog subsides, the services on the Daulatdia-Paturia route will resume, he said.
At present, 13 small and big ferries are plying this waterway.
