A BNP leader was killed during a fierce clash between the party activists and police in Panchagarh on Saturday.
Over 50 people including police were injured during the incident as well.
The deceased leader was identified as Abdur Rashid Arefin, 50, joint convener of Maidandighi union unit BNP.
He died while undergoing treatment at Panchagarh Modern Sadar Hospital on Saturday afternoon.
Earlier, he was taken to the hospital in a critical condition, District BNP committee member Mirza Nazmul Islam confirmed the matter.
According to him, as part of the scheduled program on Saturday afternoon, BNP leaders and activists took out a procession from the district BNP office located in Panchagarh around 2:30pm.
When the police obstructed the procession, a chase and counter chase between BNP activists and the law enforcers ensued.
The clash lasted for about an hour and a half.
BNP leaders and activists threw bricks pelts and stones at the police while the law enforcers fired tear shells and rubber bullets.
Locals said that the deceased BNP leader was injured by police batons.
Many pedestrians were also hit by rubber bullets. The main roads of the city remained closed till 5pm. Additional police have been deployed in the city to avoid any untoward situation.
Panchagarh Modern Sadar Hospital Resident Medical Officer Tawfiq Ahmed Ahmed said that they received a body in the hospital morgue.
Details of Arefin's death will be revealed after an autopsy, he added.
Panchagarh Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Latif Miah said at least seven to eight policemen were injured.
